Dr. John (Jack) Pollard Frush![]() April 19, 1913 - January 18, 2008
John was born in Adel, Iowa on April 19, 1913 to “Doc” and “Brom” Frush as the youngest of 3 boys. An enterprising boy, Jack (as he was known to just about everyone throughout his life) milked a neighbor’s cow and delivered the milk for a nickel a quart throughout Adel. He also became a recognized and admired fishing guide at Gull Lake in Minnesota in his early teens. The Stock Market crashed when Jack was 16 and he made the practical decision to become a dentist like his father. He attended USC and graduated in 1935 at the age of 22. Jack shrewdly purchased his first dental office by making a deal with the owner the night before it was to be sold at auction. He met and married Elizabeth Allan in 1938, shortly before he enlisted in the Navy. At first, they lived in the small apartment above the dental office. In the Navy, Jack was assigned to an icebreaker (as a dentist) that carried out some very secret missions in the North Atlantic having to do with advanced prediction of the weather over Europe. Jack and Elizabeth had 3 children, Robin, John T. (Tim) and Lucinda. He was a very good father and even with his intense work life he found time for some first class recreation with the family including sailing, fly fishing, camping, horseback riding, golf, hunting and travelling. Most of all, Jack shared his passion for life with his children. Jack’s contributions to dentistry can hardly be understated. In addition to his own private practice, he wrote highly original articles on the theory and practice of complete denture construction and lectured internationally on the subject. He owned and operated two companies, Swissedent and Accu-Dent. Jack married Lee Hoffman in 1971. They moved to Solvang, California where they lived an exciting life as a devoted couple until last Friday. Their shared interests included golf, skiing, travel and horseback riding. Jack was a member of the prestigious Rancheros riding club and Lee was a member of the Sage Hens. Jack’s professional contributions will live on, but he will be remembered most for his intelligence, curiosity, humor, honesty, energy, generosity and joie de vivre. |
