UW School of Dentistry Announces
David H. Wands Fellows in Graduate Prosthodontics
The University of Washington School of Dentistry is pleased to announce
the choice of Dr. Matthew R. Anderson, a first-year graduate student
at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, to receive the 2010
David H. Wands Endowment Fellowship in Graduate Prosthodontics. He is the 11th recipient of the $10,000
annual award.
Dr. Anderson, 32, received a DMD in 2009 from the
University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine. A native of Boise,
Idaho, he received a BA in History of Art and Visual Culture in 2002 from Boise
State University. He plans to pursue a career in private practice and also
devote time to dental education.
“I was drawn to dentistry as a profession for several
reasons,” Dr. Anderson said. “It’s one of the few disciplines where my artistic
abilities and creativity can be combined with scientific principles to improve
the quality of life of others, and it will also allow me to own my own business
and the freedom to select my practice location.
“I also enjoy working directly with patients, and I’ve
come to really value the rapport and relationships that develop over the course
of treatment. This interpersonal aspect of dentistry, as well as a great
interest in restorative dentistry coupled with a desire to become a master
treatment planner, led me to pursue advanced training in Prosthodontics at the
University of Washington.”
Dr. Anderson’s awards include the 2009 International
Association of Student Clinicians-American Dental Association Graduate
Fellowship Award, along with several honors from the University of
Pennsylvania: the Achievement Award in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Dentsply
Student Clinician Award, Drabkin Memorial Prize for Research in Biochemistry,
Quintessence Award for Research Achievement, and Quintessence Award for
Clinical Achievement. He is a member of the American Dental Association,
International Association of Student Clinicians-American Dental Association,
and American College of Prosthodontists.
Dr. Wands, who was a UW School of Dentistry faculty
member in the Department of Prosthodontics for 22 years, established the fellowship
in 1999 with a $500,000 endowment to support UW Graduate Prosthodontics
students and also encourage careers in academic dentistry. Dr. Wands graduated with honors from Baltimore College
of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland, and served for seven years with the
U.S. Public Health Service. He
returned to the University of Washington as a part-time faculty member shortly
thereafter and taught both undergraduate and graduate Prosthodontics for 20
years, achieving the rank of Clinical Professor. In addition to endowing the fellowship, Dr. Wands is a
member of the UW School of Dentistry Dean’s Club Board of Directors and was
instrumental in forming the UW Graduate Prosthodontic Alumni Association. He is
a Life Member of the Academy of Prosthodontics and Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics. Outlining his reasons for establishing the fellowship,
Dr. Wands said: “If we don’t have teachers in the dental school, then we don’t
have graduates. It’s that simple.” Now retired from private practice in
Olympia, Wash., he is an avid saltwater and freshwater fisherman as well as a
master gardener.
The Wands Fellowship in Prosthodontics provides financial assistance to
a graduate student enrolled in the UW program leading to a Certificate
in Prosthodontics and an/or a MSD Degree who is also considering an
academic career in dentistry.
