Phenotype Driven Treatment Planning for the Interdisciplinary Patient.

Time: 9:10 AM, June 21, 2025
Speaker: George Mandelaris

Synopsis:

A recent shift in terminology has introduced the term periodontal phenotype and recognized its importance in interdisciplinary dentofacial therapy (IDT) involving tooth movement and restorative/prosthodontic treatment.  Assessing each element of periodontal phenotype in the context of anticipated treatment offers an opportunity to evolve our planning. This presentation will explain periodontal phenotype and highlight phenotype modification therapies. Further, the concept and strategy of phenotype driven treatment planning (PDTP) will be discussed for the interdisciplinary patient, which targets an outcome where each element of phenotype becomes optimally protective following planned clinical intervention such as orthodontic tooth movement and/or restorative intervention.

Learning Objectives:

  • To introduce periodontal phenotype and define its clinical parameters
  • To discuss the concept of phenotype driven treatment planning in interdisciplinary dentofacial therapy
  • To highlight case examples of how phenotype driven treatment can be used to optimize periodontal parameters and expand the envelope of treatment opportunities to solve complex interdisciplinary problems
