Dr. Joseph P. Cooney


At the 81st Annual Meeting of the Pacific Coast Society for
Prosthodontics at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, California, President Frederick ?Fritz? Finzen honored Dr. Joseph P. Cooney with the Fred Gulick Distinguished Life Member Award.

Dr. Cooney graduated from the dental school at the National University of Ireland in 1968.  He entered the Graduate Prosthodontic Program at the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 1970.  Dr. Cooney received his prosthodontic specialty certificate and an M.S. degree in 1972.

Following completion of his specialty training, Dr. Cooney became a faculty member at the UCLA School of Dentistry in 1972, and continued a full-time appointment until his retirement in 2006.  As a Clinical Professor Emeritus, Dr. Cooney continued at UCLA with part-time teaching and clinical practice until he fully retired in 2014.  While at UCLA, Dr. Cooney conducted and published dental research.  Notably, he served as the Director for the Graduate Prosthodontics Program for ten years before his retirement.

Since 1979, Dr. Cooney has had a long history of dedicated service to the PCSP.  He has served as Secretary/Treasurer, as well as Local Arrangements Chair in both 1999 and 2008. In 2002, Dr. Cooney was the President of the PCSP.  Joe is still an active contributor to the organization, and he is a current member of the Contract Review Committee.

In addition to the PCSP, Dr. Cooney had active memberships in the American College of Prosthodontists, American Dental Association, International Association for Dental Research and the American Dental Education Association. Dr. Cooney was awarded Diplomate status by the American Board of Prosthodontics.

In retirement, Joe is enjoying being able to spend more time with family, friends and especially his best friend and wife, Rita.  He now has more time for golf, gardening and reading the morning paper with his cup of tea.

Congratulations to you Dr. Cooney, for your accomplishments as an educator, clinician, researcher, in addition to your many years of service to the Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics.
